 A few years ago I was doing what I do best, lounging, when I asked myself a simple question. What if? Like many people, I have always wanted to write. My question that day was: What if I wrote a book with mystery and romance? What if it took a few twists and turns and tied up all the loose ends by the last page? I got out of the lawn chair, went to my computer, and wrote the ending. I had no idea what I was getting into, but as Einstein once said, "If at first the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it." Over the next year I wrote the rest of Amanda's Rib, trying to get to that ending. It was the hardest work I've ever loved.
Writing isn't merely the act of putting words on paper. There are rules, a lot of rules, and I discovered I didn't know any of them. I took classes and joined workshops. Finding good critique partners is difficult, but worth the effort. Amanda's Rib has gone through many revisions, each making the work shorter, yet better.
The characters were great fun to write. Amanda is feisty, vulnerable and smart. I understand feisty and vulnerable, but smart was a challenge and required a lot of research.
Several women shared their deepest fears and secrets to help me comprehend feeling powerless. Those ladies are among the bravest people I've ever met. I hope Amanda serves them well.
Many people think authors write about their own experiences. I suppose some do, but I'm not one of them. There may be some of me in Amanda, probably her less attractive qualities, but events in the novel are entirely fiction.
My husband has been extremely patient while I followed my dream. If he's been biding his time, waiting for me to get writing out of my system, he's in for a surprise. Not long ago I asked myself a couple of questions again. What if I wrote another book with mystery and romance? What if it took a few twists and turns and tied up all the loose ends by the last page? Then I got out of my comfy chair, went to my computer, and wrote the ending.
